Root Canals
Endodontic Treatment & Root Canals in Selinsgrove
If you have a serious infection or inflammation in the roots of your tooth, a root canal may be necessary to help alleviate the pain and save your tooth from extraction. Valley Dental Group provides root canals in our Selinsgrove dental office. While many people tend to associate negative feelings with the words “root canal,” they’re actually not as bad as most people think. Modern advances in dentistry have made them far less painful than they used to be, and without this type of dental procedure, you’d be more likely to have a more painful abscess or bone loss in your jaw as a result.
During a root canal procedure, your infected tooth and the surrounding area will be numbed using a local anesthetic. Our dentist will then drill into your infected tooth, creating an opening in its canal, that allows him to go in and remove the infected pulp (tissue) from your tooth. Once that’s been done, the hole in your tooth’s canal will either be covered back up by a sealant or a dental crown. Most dentists recommend using a dental crown. You may experience some soreness after the procedure, but pain medications should have you feeling better soon.
Common Myths about Root Canal Therapy
Much of the public’s knowledge about root canals is based on misconceptions. Here are a few common myths about root canals and the truth about them:
They’re Painful
As aforementioned, modern advances in dentistry make getting a root canal no more painful than getting a cavity filled. Treatment is usually quick and relatively comfortable, especially when compared with the pain you likely experienced before getting the procedure done.
They Cause Cancer
There is no scientific evidence linking root canals and illnesses. You should leave our office healthier after a root canal than you were when you came through the door.
Extraction is Better
This myth is just silly when you think about it. Why would anyone prefer having their tooth extracted? Missing teeth are not only not aesthetically appealing, but they also cause other serious oral health issues. Replacing a missing tooth with a bridge or a dental implant often requires more treatment time than a root canal.
